Imagine a Yellowstone where dinosaurs and grizzlies walk side by side and eagles and Pteranodons share the sky.
Changing of the Guard tells the story of Yellowstone Park by showing us a day in the life of the animals who call Yellowstone home. Ted Rechlin introduces us to the animals we would see if we visited Yellowstone today. Moose, coyotes, wolves, grizzly bears, eagles and ground squirrels, but he super-imposes the denizens of the past over the inhabitants of today. The ground squirrel goes through her day in the company of the ancient Purgatorius, the bison grazes beside the Triceratops and eagles and Pteranodons float in the updrafts over Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley.
Rechlin’s Changing of the Guard illustrates how the food chain in a natural environment works. Within the loose framework of a typical day in Yellowstone, Rechlin pairs the pre-historic creature equivalent to today’s inhabitants as they hunt for food and try to stay out of the way of the creatures who are hunting them. The book is full of vivid and colourful illustrations, created by the author. Some pages are black and white line drawings that are suitable for colouring.
Changing of the Guard is well researched and easy to read and understand. It illustrates the balance in nature that exists between predator and prey and is also an insightful window into similarities and differences between the inhabitants of pre-historic times and present day. Educators and parents alike will find this book an entertaining and educational offering. Young readers will enjoy the colourful illustrations and the easy to follow text, while absorbing the educational information.
